If you have already learned to count and do simple arithmetic, you already know something about numbers. The first thing you learned about numbers was how to use them for counting. You may not have realized that there are many different kinds of number systems. For example, whole numbers are a different system from fractions. There are also other systems, with odd names like irrational, transcendental, and imaginary numbers, that you probably have never heard about. The numbers that you use for counting are called natural numbers.
